April is New Homes Month

Don’t get ripped off! Protect yourself with the facts!

The idea of a new home is often as exciting as seeing the first signs of Spring. A new home, however, is not something that likely comes around every year for you and your family. With such major decisions to be made you want to make sure you have all of the information you need to make the right choices that not only suit your family’s needs now, but also for several years to come.

The Nova Scotia Home Builders’ Association (NSHBA) is one resource that has consumer information available to help homebuyers make better decisions when it comes to their new home.

“The idea of building or buying a new home can be overwhelming if you don’t know what to expect or the right questions to ask, but we want to make it a little easier for homeowners so they can enjoy the process,” says Paul Pettipas, NSHBA chief executive officer.

One way the NSHBA can help with this is by offering Consumer Protection Sessions across the province to answer a number of questions which consumers frequently ask when it comes to building a new home.

“We want consumers to know the right questions to ask their contractor before they hire them, what the new trends are for homes, the benefits of energy efficient construction, financial information, heating choices, why you want to make sure a home is able to meet your communication needs and the benefits a home warranty offers,” adds Pettipas. “These tips and suggestions are just a few of the topics covered at our Consumer Protection Sessions and help consumers to make informed decisions.”

These sessions are a part of the NSHBA’s New Homes Month campaign and will be held at various locations across the province throughout April and are offered at no charge. All participants need to do is pre-register for the session taking place in their area and they will receive a useful toolkit of resource material to help them with their building project, and they will also have the opportunity to listen and ask questions of the experts in the industry.

New Homes Month seminars are presented in partnership with Efficiency Nova Scotia Corporation, Nova Scotia Power Inc. and Bell Aliant and sponsored by Atlantic Home Warranty and Viewpoint.ca.

To register for the seminar in your area phone 450-5554 / 1-800-668-2001 or email sgrant@nshba.ns.ca and indicate the seminar you will be attending.
